Dance competitions: how they help kids grow and where kids can participate

Dancing competitions exist because music does.Everyone loves music and that is why it is referred to as the universal language. It is the only thing in the world that can make different people from different social backgrounds understand and go in-sync with the other person’s feelings. This form of expression is full of emotion. In dance competitions, the emotions are well illustrated by motion. In dance competitions, competitors perform dances in any of the several permitted dance styles such as hip hop, lyrical, modern, accro, ballet and tap styles. Dancing competitions also feature instances where competitors use only one specific dancing style and are rated and judged based on their performance at it.
Kids in the United States of America are lucky to have dance competition companies that conduct regional competitions in search of the best and most talented. Kids who compete in these regional competitions are most of the times dance students who are between the ages of six and eighteen. It is not unusual to find dance schools arranging their kids to compete in groups. The best students are arranged to compete in either solo, or in small groups of duo, trio or quad.

In dance competitions, the competing dancers must be of good physical health. Even the shortest dances demand for physical strength and agility. Dancers who regularly train are the ones in a better position to compete. To be able to maintain balance, improve on technique and flexibility, continuous training has to be done. In order for a team to compete and get good results in dancing competitions, the members have dedicate their time and endure a lot of physical strain. Passionate dancers however do not feel like their time is being lost. What they feel is the need to practice more and also become innovative in their moves.

In all kid dance competitions, there has to be a routine.

A number of reasons determine which category a routine should be entered.

  • The dance style – Because all dance competitions include categories for the specific dance styles mentioned above. A competition also gives space for one or few dance styles to be used outside the scope of the specified categories.
  • The average age of dancers – Different kid dance competitions have different age divisions. The most typical age divisions include petite (5-8), junior (9-12), teen (13-15), senior (16-19) and senior (20+)
  • The number of dancers
  • Having different categories, the number of dancers in kid dance competitions is classified as: solo, duo, trio, small group, large group, line and production. The class each team falls is determined by the number of dancers as well as the category in which the team is competing in.
  • The experience – some competitions have divisions based on the number of years in dance school.
  • The number of dance instruction hours per week. This factor is used to determine whether the teams competing do dancing as a recreational activity or as competitive.

Dance competitions: dance routines use music adapted from commercially recorded songs which are created by recording artists.

The dance routines are timed in many competitions and also, the music is edited to conform to the time limits. In some cases, the routines are adjudicated so as to thoroughly check the appropriateness and character of all the teams in the dance routine.

The rules which govern dance competition routines vary from one competition to another. A few of the more popular dance competitions include Encore Dance Competition,  Showbiz Dance Competition, StarQuest Dance Competition, Star Power Dance Competition, Spotlight Dance Competition, Hall of Fame Dance Competition, Showstoppers Dance Competition & Jump Dance Convention. For instance, soloists are allowed to compete more than one solo at a single competition whereas it is the opposite for a team. The process that is used to judge and award marks is very transparent. Small groups only compete against mall groups, duos, trios and even the bigger groups the same way respectively. These dance competitions use professional dancers as judges. These events enhance the spirit of competitiveness as every team tries it’s level best to prove to the competitor that it is the best. With most of the competitions starting from regional to national levels, the overall best are in very good positions to become stars while they are still young. With professional dancing being one of the most lucrative entertainment careers in today’s world, these kid dancing competitions play a big role in bringing to stardom the future pro dancers.
